Apple Pie Trail Blog Trail Stop #11

Currie's Farm Market, Collingwood

Currie's Farm Market, Trail Stop #7 in CollingwoodAt the corner of 6th Street and the 10th Line in Collingwood right across from the Georgian Meadows subdivision, you’ll find Currie’s Farm Market, a charming and authentic family run farm market that has been in operation since 1957. Candice and Chris Currie are the third generation of Curries to operate the market and much of the produce offered comes right from the adjacent Currie Farm, the last working farm in Collingwood.

They’ve created the most delicious Apple Caramel Muffin just for the Apple Pie Trail and I can tell you first hand that it’s a fantastic way to start your morning because the muffins are baked fresh daily and perfect with an aromatic cup of Kicking Horse Coffee fresh brewed.

Currie's Farm Market, Trail Stop #7 in CollingwoodWith a focus on offering as many non GMO culinary options as possible and firm beliefs in sustainability, the Curries are very keen on supporting other local farmers and suppliers through their farm market. You’ll find products from Meredith’s Ginger Syrup, The New Farm in Creemore, milk from Miller’s Dairy in Creemore, meat products and frozen entrees from Blue Ridge Meets in Collingwood, delicious pies from The Blackbird Pie Company in Heathcote and cheeses from Dags and Willow in Collingwood - and that’s just a start.

Currie's Farm Market, Trail Stop #7 in CollingwoodThe market is open seven days a week from Victoria Day right through to Christmas and is an excellent place to source that all important very tasty Thanksgiving bird or the family Christmas tree. Getting a Christmas tree from the Curries is an experience in itself…you’ll likely find Chris Currie outside in the tree lot beside the market bundled up beside the fire waiting to shake your hand, give warm greetings and even offer you a cup of warm, locally produced Blue Mountains Cider – a bonus as you take home the most fragrant trees ever to grace your home for the holidays.

New things in the area

With no shortage of events and activities available this summer in the area it's a great opportunity to check out new stuff so we've highlighted some of the new businesses and things to do (yes shopping is an activity) that have opened in the area recently.
Check out the Apex Bag Jump at Blue Mountain and test your limits as you free fall from heights of up to 21 feet. Start small, and work your way up to the highest platform where you'll leap onto the air bag waiting below. With four platforms of increasing height, every jumper will have the chance to challenge themselves.
The Paint Bar located at 167 Hurontario Street in Downtown Collingwood is a great place to spend some creative time with the kids.
Coriander, a beautiful clothing, home and gift boutique has opened at 83 Hurontario Street and they've got some great stuff in the store.
Echo Trends has opened a gorgeous new store at 38 Pine Street in Downtown Collingwood earlier this summer.
The Collingwood Bread Company is now open in Cranberry Mews!  Fresh handmade organic bread baked fresh daily.  Pop in and see Glenn and wish him well with his new business and while you're at it pick up a loaf of bread or two.
Jasper Life opened a couple of months ago in the Balsam Street Plaza - check them out for indoor/outdoor furniture and home decor items.
Northwinds Brew Pub is scheduled to open soon and you can keep track of their progress through Facebook or check out their website
The Collingwood Brewery also opened recently and is open for tours, plus they've got some great pint glasses for sale. Stop by, take a brewery tour, taste test and take home some Downhill Pale Ale.
Giffen's Country Market once again has a satellite store just south of Poplar Side Road on County Road 124 (which is what Hurontario Street turns into). Their main operation is in Glen Huron so it's a great treat that Giffen's famous butter tarts are available just around the corner.
New in Thornbury for ladies fashions and home decor you might what to check out Nantucket & Co.  located at 51 Bruce Street S. Tel:  519.599.5050. Also on the home decor side is Ashbury Cabin located at 21 Bruce Street S. Tel:  519.373.9628.
Speaking of new - have you checked out the Collingwood Buy Sell Facebook page?  Great way to save money, be sustainable, recycle, get rid of stuff you don't want and so on - check it out. It's a closed group to you have to ask to be added. You can pick up some incredible deals and new stuff is posted daily.
As always check out our Events Calendar and Activities Calendar for options on how to spend your time or keep the little people in your life a little unplugged and away from the TV.

Summer of Love - Theatre Collingwood

Theatre Collingwood is delighted to present the production of "Summer of Love" - July 15-19, 2014 at The Historic Gayety Theatre. This production is sponsored by Royal LePage Trinity Realty. This show is presented by Theatre Collingwood and comes to us from the very talented folks at C2 Entertainment.

"Memories of the Summer of Love" takes us back to a time of PEACE, LOVE, and good vibrations. The show begins with the music of the early 60's and showcases groups like The Beach Boys, Gerry & The Pacemakers, and The Monkees. Stories are told about the time period and the innocence of the time. We then move to the mid 60's and civil rights, and the struggle of teens to be recognized in a mostly conservative time. With music from Peter, Paul and Mary, and Joni Mitchell the focus is on the folk movement and the part it played. The first act closes with songs from Buffalo Springfield and Bob Dylan, which reflect the Vietnam experience and the call for the end to the war in Southeast Asia.

Act two opens with the number one song of 1967 by The Doors, although they never performed at the Monterrey Pop Festival, their anthem "Light My Fire" haled the birth of the summer of love. The show continues with a recreation of some of the most memorable performances from the Monterrey Pop Festival including Janis Joplin, The Association, and Laura Nero. As the act continues we hear more about the time and reflect more on the day to day life of a teen in 1967. Next we look at the influence that Simon and Garfunkel made and the songs that spoke to a generation. Finally we end with the music of The Mamas and the Papas and Scott McKenzie. Their songs where the corner stone's of the hippy movement and the song "San Francisco" was truly the anthem for the summer of love.

The intention is for our audience to relive the music and emotion of the 60's and hopefully rekindles the spirit of the Summer of Love, and the need for social change, even in our time.

There are two things that really excite me about this show, said Executive Director Erica Angus, the first is that this music is universally loved and appreciated by all ages. I know I will enjoy the show and so will my kids. Secondly, this cast is incredibly talented and we are so lucky to have such fine professionals coming to Collingwood!

"The summer of love was actually 1967 with the Monterrey Pop Festival. This show tells that story. We are happy to once again offer $5 tickets to this production for high school students who want to come learn about this pivotal time in music history!" said Harold Bickerstaff, Theatre Collingwood Chair.

iPhone Joe - Get your iPhone fixed in Collingwood

Getting your iPhone fixed in Collingwood just got simple. Opened in June, iPhone Joe is an emerging local business promising fast, affordable, and reliable repairs for iPads, iPods, and naturally, iPhones. Joe Crozier, the founder of the operation, has been repairing said devices for years, and is now exceptionally confident in his abilities.

Joe saw a need for the business when he learned that many Collingwood residents were being forced to travel to Barrie or Toronto to get their iPhones fixed. Having been tinkering with his own electronics for years, Joe realized an excellent opportunity for a business venture into the world of cell phone repair. Boasting years of experience fixing iOS devices, Joe advertises his ability to fix any and all problems which plague the devices, listing cracked screens, broken buttons, and failing batteries as some of his most common repairs.

iPhone Joe is conveniently located in Collingwood at 81 Lockhart road. Joe offers free pick-up and delivery for customers in Collingwood, allowing residents to have repairs done without ever leaving their home. Joe is happy to serve the entirety of the Georgian Triangle, with customers coming from Barrie, Clearview, and Wasaga Beach for his excellent service. Pricing information can be found at his website.

New Look New Menu at The Pottery

The Pottery Restaurant at Blue Mountain Has Re-Opened After Undergoing Exciting Renovations! The Pottery Restaurant boasts a beautiful and bright new look! At 7am on Friday, May 30th, the staff members at The Pottery Restaurant were unlocking its front doors to prepare for the re-opening! The Pottery Restaurant, located in the Blue Mountain Inn, has re-opened after undergoing major renovations. The restaurant now boasts a brighter and more contemporary look than its previous décor, while still maintaining its rustic roots. As soon as guests enter the restaurant, they experience an entirely new entrance way followed by a bright open dining area. The restaurant has been renovated completely, from its heightened and brightened ceilings, to its floors and carpeting.

“We are very excited to have launched the newly renovated space,” said Steve Flagler, Director of Food and Beverage, Blue Mountain Resort. “The Pottery Restaurant has always been a fantastic on resort dining experience, and its new look reflects that.”

Guests will notice that the restaurant has been completely re-painted, and what once was covered in warm shades of red and brown is now much brighter in shades of white. When guests look up, they will be amazed by the beautiful skylights where a hallway used to sit, now ushering in an abundance of natural light. The renovations have created an overall brighter space in the dining areas, and almost every aspect of the restaurant has been updated. Behind the scenes, the restaurant has acquired a completely new kitchen and area for the serving staff. The restaurant is excited to also introduce an updated menu, with new items such as chicken mignon with crimini mushroom ravioli, and zucchini and flank steak skewers, while still including old favourites such as The Pottery’s signature chicken, shrimp and peanut pad thai.

“We wanted to turn an old favourite into a new hotspot,” said Flagler, “and this renovation will help us to do just that.”

The new breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, and wine menus can be accessed on our website, www.bluemountain.ca, on The Pottery Restaurant page under Eateries & Nightlife. The Pottery Restaurant is now open; so grab your friends, try some delicious food, and enjoy its new look!
